Dental and Vision Care After Retirement

We have over 30 years of experience providing expert guidance to Arizonians when buying Medicare with Dental and Vision benefits, or a stand alone Dental and Vision plan

Why is it important for seniors to have good dental and eye health?  Access to dental and vision care can be a problem upon retirement because original Medicare and most Medicare Supplements do not cover dental and vision services.  Skipping a trip to the dentist or eye doctor can lead to serious health problems for older adults, such as tooth decay, tooth loss and an increased risk for heart disease.  Seniors are also at increased risk for age-related eye conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease.

Most of our plans include coverage for preventative services (exams), crowns, root canals, dentures, and tooth replacement, as well as allowance for eyeglasses and/or contact lenses.

Types of Dental & Vision

We offer the following types of dental & vision stand alone plans.  Note a Medicare Advantage plan may also offer dental and vision coverage.

An Dental or Vision Health Maintenance Organization is a low cost plan where fees for services are predetermined and you must use providers in the network.

A Dental or Vision Preferred Provider Organization plans have large networks and flexibility to choose any provider.

Dental & Vision Savings Plans have no annual spending limits and are more about access to great discounts – that support seniors’ dental and vision care needs.

Dental and Vision Plans for Medicare Recipients

Frequently Asked Questions

Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover dental and vision care or services. Medicare will however cover some specific costs when they are related to services received in a hospital. Medicare does cover some eye care services for diabetics, such as testing and treatment for diabetic retinopathy, or glaucoma, and other eye disease, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Buying a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan that includes dental and vision coverage is the only way you’ll receive these services under Medicare. Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans do not include dental or vision services, however, you can buy a separate dental or vision policy and bundle it with your Medicare Supplement.

Yes. Many of the carriers we work with offer standalone dental and vision plans to seniors. If you are also purchasing a Medicare Supplement, you may be offered a discount for bundling your plans. Please browse our standalone dental and vision carriers and plans by clicking the “Shop & Compare Plans Now” button above.

Most standalone dental and vision plans can be purchased at any time of the year.  If you are bundling your plan with a Medicare Supplement plan, or if you choose to buy a Medicare Advantage plan that includes dental and/or vision coverage, you should buy your policy during the annual Medicare open enrollment period, which is October 15th through December 7th.

Whether you purchase a standalone policy, or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes dental services, you can typically choose between preventative service (exams & cleanings), basic coverage (fillings or restorative work) or major coverage (root canals, crowns, dentures and bridges). Plans that have major or extensive coverage may have higher premiums. Vision insurance typically includes preventative benefits such annual exams, glasses, and contact lenses.  Some vision plans with higher premiums may offer additional benefits such as eyeglass lens coatings and enhancements, or discounts on some elective vision correction surgery like LASIK and PRK.

Whether you get more value from a Medicare Advantage plan that includes dental and vision coverage, or from a separate standalone policy, really depends on the amount of services you believe you will use, and on the rates. In addition to comparing premiums, you’ll want to also compare copays and annual maximum benefits of the plan. Some plans max out benefits after a certain amount and will not pay for further treatment or services until the next year. Dental & Vision Savings Plans

For a very low monthly fee, these discount plans boast a  nationwide network of more than 150,000 dentists and eye-care providers who offer discounts ranging from 10-60% on a wide variety of dental procedures and eye care services to plan members. You pay the discounted rate directly to any participating dentist or eye care provider at the time of treatment.

Most people value these types of savings plans as a great alternative to an expensive insurance plan.

Dental & Vision PPOs

Dental and Vision PPOs (Preferred Provider Organization) usually have higher out-of-pocket costs and has a deductible that must be met before it will pay for some services, however, unlike the HMO, these plans allow freedom to use any dentist or eye doctor and usually does not require a referral to visit a specialist.

Like the HMO, these plans have a network of providers under contract with our carriers. You can see providers in the network (which will save you the most money), but you can select providers outside of network as well.

PPO’s generally have a large network of quality providers to choose from, and you do not need to appoint a primary provider to receive services, however there may be a waiting period before you can see a provider.

Many HMO dental and vision care plans cover preventive services at 100%. This means services like routine dental and eye exams, and things like cleanings and X-rays won’t cost you anything out-of-pocket. The purpose of preventative care is to lower your risk of developing more costly serious issues down the road.

Dental & Vision HMOs

Dental and Vision HMOs (Health Maintenance Organization) are plans that are intended to help lower costs for dental and eye care.  There are generally lower premium plans with no deductibles.  Most out-of-pocket costs will be transparent upfront before services are rendered and there is no annual maximum for covered benefits.

These plans have a specific network of dentists and eye doctors/providers who have agreed to provide services for a specific amount and are under contract with our carriers.  You may be required to appoint a primary provider to receive services.
